Educational Visits

We work the Horkesley Park Suffolk Punches on our Anchor Inn Heritage Farm, adjoining the Anchor Inn in Nayland, every Tuesday and Thursday between 12.00 noon and 2.00pm at least (weather and ground conditions permitting), and encourage the general public to enjoy, free of charge, the farm and to watch the heavy horses at work.

For a nominal charge we also host guided tours for schools and other groups who are interested in learning about the Suffolk Punches and the Heritage Farm, through which the River Stour gently meanders. The whole experience usually takes place on the Anchor Inn Heritage Farm, where we explain what we do there and share our knowledge about Suffolk Punches and show them at work.

The educational visits are arranged to meet the requirements and focus of a particular group.  The visit may include nature trails, conservation work, heritage farming including getting “up close” to our rare breeds of livestock, and demonstrations from “field to fork” - looking at vegetables in the “kitchen garden” and the cooked result.  These visits are a fantastic teaching resource in a “rural classroom” suitable for all ages of children and also adults, who have an interest in the countryside and where food comes from.  We cater for all ages from pre-school to adults and for people of any ability and gear visits accordingly, often with tastings and/or meals prepared by the Anchor Inn from the Anchor Inn Heritage Farm produce.

As an alternative to possibly taking a few classes or small group of children out of school or college to visit the Anchor Inn Heritage Farm, we can attend the school or college with a Horkesley Park Suffolk Punch Display Team or one of our other display teams.  Our teams are available for a part or full day to run or be part of an event where the whole school or college can benefit, and become involved with a range of talks, demonstrations, activities, etc.

Our Horkesley Park Suffolk Punches attending school and college events are always a big draw and a great addition to the day.  We are able to provide photographs and promotional information in advance of an event or fun day to encourage people to come along and join in… Depending on the time of year, we can usually attend with a mare and foal and/or offer a wide range of activities from static “pat and touch” educational displays to grooming events, dray rides and hands-on working activities.

Bunting & Sons are very health and safety conscious.  Although we have not experienced any incidents, we have public liability insurance of £5 million and employers liability insurance of £10 million, which covers us whether “at home” or away.  We carry out risk assessments in advance of any event and to ensure good hygiene provide antibacterial hand washes, or soap and water washes, for people who get the opportunity to interact in a hands on way with the horses and other animals.  Many of our staff have been CRB checked/approved.
